Bulgaria is one of the countries with the largest number of homeless dogs in Europe. Lacking adequate food and veterinary care, their suffering is tremendous. Mange and other severe and painful skin conditions are common, and they struggle to find enough to eat. Thousands are legally pulled off the streets and taken to overburdened "shelters" – some facilities are staffed by kind people who have few resources to help the animals, while others just hold them briefly before they just disappear.

Most of these facilities lack appropriate food, space, and even protection from the freezing cold – and since many of the dogs are not spayed or neutered, they create another generation of homeless pups.
